The Planet Under Pressure Conference was held in London from March 26-29, 2012. To contribute to the knowledge needed to move society forward towards effective stewardship of the planet, EEPSEA organized and presented two panel sessions at the conference.
The first session, entitled “Recognizing, Demonstrating and Capturing Ecosystem Service Values: Lessons from TEEB and EEPSEA”, was a joint panel event between TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity) and EEPSEA.
Dr. Wictor Adamowicz, EEPSEA resource person, was the Chair for this session. Dr. Herminia Francisco, EEPSEA Director, and Dr. Orapan Nabangchang, EEPSEA Senior Economist, presented a paper on “Ecosystem Valuation: Experiences from Southeast Asia”.
The second panel session was on “Lessons from Modeling the Linkage between Economy and the Environment in Southeast Asia and China”. This session was chaired by Dr. Budy Resosudarmo and four papers were presented by EEPSEA researchers: (a) “On the Distribution Impact of a Carbon Tax in Developing Countries: The Case of Indonesia” by Arief Anshory Yusuf, EEPSEA Senior Economist in Indonesia; (b) “The Co-Benefits of Carbon Tax in China’s Iron and Steel Industry: Based on an Integrated Top-Down and Bottom-Up Model” by Zhaoyang Liu; (c) “The Impact of Trade Liberalization on Pollution and Poverty in Lao PDR—Empirical Results from CGE Model and Micro-simulation” by Phouphet Kyophilavong; and (d) “Tariff Reduction, Carbon Emissions and Poverty: An Economy-Wide Assessment for the Philippines” by Erwin Corong
