EEPSEA participated in the International Conference on Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation for Food and Environmental Security held at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) in Los Baños, Philippines last 21 to 22 November 2012.
The conference was held to provide a venue for the exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge on climate science, adaptation strategies, disaster risk reduction, planning and management, and vulnerability and impact assessment tools, in the context of climate change, among regional stakeholders specifically in the agriculture and environment sectors. It also aimed to promote partnerships and linkages among different sectors for collaborative activities on climate change adaptation (CCA). The conference was organized by SEARCA and the University of Los Baños Interdisciplinary Program on Climate Change. The Program supported the participation of six conference speakers who presented the results of their EEPSEA research. Three speakers spoke on research that studied vulnerability and climate change economic impacts. Dr. Bui Dung The of Hue University presented partial results of a cross-country research on climate change vulnerability at the commune and household levels in Cambodia, Philippines, and Vietnam. EEPSEA Senior Economist Dr. Orapan Nabangchang presented on the household economic losses during Thailand’s 2011 flood. Dr. Flordeliza Bordey of the Philippine Rice Research Institute presented on the link between climate change, rice yield and migration in the Philippines.

EEPSEA Senior Economist Dr. Pham Khanh Nam presented on the attitudes towards flooding risks in Vietnam and its implications for insurance. Dr. Asa Jose Sajise of the University of Los Baños presented on the climate change vulnerability assessments, and economic and policy analysis of adaptation strategies in selected coastal areas in Indonesia and the Philippines. Lastly, Dr. Vo Thanh Danh of Cantho University presented the risk cost-benefit economic analysis of creating a concrete sea dike system to adapt to sea level rise in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
EEPSEA Director Herminia Francisco also presented during the panel discussion on “Networking for Research and Development and Capacity Building on Climate Change and Food, And Environmental Security”.
