The province of Iloilo was one of the areas most heavily affected by Typhoon Frank in June 2008. This study aimed to understand the immediate and long-term measures adopted by Iloilo households and communities to adapt to and cope with the impacts of extreme climate-induced events, particularly typhoon and flooding. The research areas include six barangays along the Magapa-Suage River and Jalaur River systems that were heavily affected by Typhoon Frank. Results indicate that the average losses amounted close to PhP 13,500/ household, roughly 17% of household annual income. The experience with Typhoon Frank showed that a combination of infrastructural, economic, and social strategies are needed for communities to better adapt to and cope with potential impacts of extreme weather events. The provision of affordable credit lines and the development of linkages with various institutions that can provide trainings on climate change adaptation will help enhance the communities’ adaptive capacities.
